Prayers, Good Thoughts, Good Karma Needed

If you've got them, Rufus and Sparky need them. They're on their way to Auburn's vet school with John to get the only two vials of rattlesnake anti-venom in Georgia or Alabama. About 3 hours ago Astro killed a rattlesnake, but only after it had bitten Rufie and Sparky. Astro, Destroyer of Remote Controls and Shredder of Magazines, now adds Slayer of Snakes to his titles. John watched Astro deliver the killing bite when he went to see why the dogs were barking so furiously and John finished the snake off by beating it with a big stick. It was a baby rattler.

I had just gotten out of the shower after working on my one-rein stops with Asia and was planning on going to the grocery store when John came in telling me that Sparky had been bitten. We threw all four dogs into the car and I called the vet's and they said that they would meet me at the clinic, but they had no antivenom. I've learned that no one does, except for one vial in Watkinsville, which is near Athens. The vet found antivenom at Auburn and we made the decision to take them there despite the costs. How could we not? So, Craig came and picked me, Kudzu and the Slayer of Snakes up so I could take them home and also feed the horses. John is on his way to Auburn and I'm about to head to the grocery store.

When he left, the dogs had good temps, heart rates and breathing, but the vet explained that things could take a turn for the worse easily. It's best, she said, if the antivenom gets injected within four hours. They won't make that, but it will be within six and that's still worth trying. So, prayers, good karma, good thoughts please for Sparky and Rufus. Stay tuned.
