Found in the woods today

This old gear wheel was not too far from where we normally cross a creek, but we couldn't today as the creek was too high. The Ocmulgee River levels haven't dropped since last weekend's torrential downpour, so the creek, normally at fetlock level, was so high that the horses would have been swimming. It's warm today, but the water was chilly and I really didn't feel like cleaning tack. Also, a tree has fallen across the creek at the crossing, so we would have been bumping our heads. Helmets are a nice safety feature, but I don't want to purposefully hit my head. As we turned around to bushwack our way around the tree, I saw this gear. Who knows how many years it's been out in the woods and how many hundreds of times I've ridden by it and never noticed it. I pride myself on looking around as I'm riding, but really, how much am I missing? There's probably a rusted out Model T not 100' off the trail that I'll not notice until a tree comes down and forces me off the trail.

I count myself so blessed that I spend most weekends hanging out in the woods.
